Navigating Threats to DACA and Immigrant Communities:
Resources for Expanded Learning Providers
to Support Staff

The Threat of Immigration Enforcement: How Expanded Learning Can Support Students and Families, is a brief aimed to inform and support expanded learning programs with students, families, and staff facing immigration enforcement.

California’s immigrant and Latinx communities face growing threats from deportation policies and increased law enforcement presence. In 2021, 20% of minors—1.8 million—were undocumented or lived with an undocumented family member, including 32% of Latino and 19% of Asian American youth (KQED). Districts, Expanded Learning providers, youth-serving NGO’s, and CBO’s must develop plans to support and retain staff aiding affected students and families, especially those with DACA status, who face ongoing legal uncertainty.

PCY is compiling resources to help Expanded Learning providers, youth-serving nonprofits, and community based organizations equip staff to:

  1. Protect children, youth, and families;

  2. Navigate direct threats of anti-immigrant policies and rhetoric, including the likely end of DACA; and

  3. Withstand the mental health impacts and secondary trauma of supporting students and families who are facing the threat of deportation.
