California Afterschool Advocacy Alliance (CA³)

California leads the nation in publicly-funded after-school programs, with annual appropriations of nearly $700 million in combined state and federal funding. This commitment provides more than 400,000 students access to safe and enriching after-school activities. These programs have been delivered cost-effectively through partnerships with community-based organizations and local government, and have demonstrated positive outcomes for participants, families and communities.

CA3_LogoThe change in federal administration, combined with the pending change in California, offers a unique window of opportunity to make a lasting impact on after-school policy. We believe that effectiveness after-school programs are the product of intentional partnerships between education agencies and community-based organizations, where non-credentialed teachers support academic achievement through experiential and project-based learning that nurtures the skills and interests of students. After School Education and Safety programs have successfully expanded learning time in our state for over a decade, and the collective voice of those practitioners is of paramount importance as policy-makers consider proposals to re-design the school day.

The time has come for after-school advocates and their key stakeholders to align policy agendas, pool resources and coordinate lobbying efforts for the benefit of their collective constituency. Therefore, a dedicated group of partners has established the California Afterschool Advocacy Alliance (CA³), consisting of the following agencies that have invested, and are committed to investing significant time and resources to influence state and national after-school policies:

  • After-School All-Stars of Los Angeles
  • Boys and Girls Clubs of California
  • California School-Age Consortium
  • Central Valley Afterschool Foundation
  • Children’s Initiative
  • Children Now
  • Citizen Schools California
  • Fight Crime: Invest in Kids California
  • LA’s BEST
  • League of California Afterschool Providers
  • Partnership for Children and Youth
  • San Francisco New Day for Learning Initiative
  • Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center
  • Team Up for Youth
  • THINK Together
  • Woodcraft Rangers
  • YMCA’s of California
This alliance of agencies will collaborate to adopt a shared vision for after-school in California. They will then create a policy agenda and develop a common set of accountability standards in alignment with that vision, and share the labor and cost involved in building and making their case for both policy-makers and the general public.
