Out of School Time Initiatives

Developing Quality After School, and Summer Learning and Enrichment Programs in High-Poverty Neighborhoods

Students are often put at risk during unsupervised, out-of-school time. But by participating in vibrant, dynamic programs during these hours, kids build self-esteem, increase school success, and gain critical life skills.

The Partnership helps schools and community organizations secure resources to provide high quality programs and services that ensure students are safe, engaged, and learning during the hours when they are not in school.

Our After School Initiative

Through our After School Initiative the Partnership is:

  • Increasing the number of children and youth participating in quality after school programs;
  • Improving the design and quality of after school programs; and
  • Ensuring that after school programs can be sustained over time by helping to identify and secure critical funding from sources including 21st Century, ASES and Proposition 49.

Our Summer Learning and enrichment initiative

Through our Summer Learning and Enrichment Initiative the Partnership is:

  • Promoting expansion of summertime programming for children in low-income neighborhoods;
  • Leading policy development and advocacy efforts to ensure support of summertime programs through sustainable funding; and
  • Developing strong local training and support for summertime program staff to increase overall program quality.

Some Achievements of Our Out-of-School Time Intiatives

  • Created and expanded programs serving over 15,000 students;
  • Raised over $65 million in long-term support for after school and summer programs;
  • Established and strengthened sustainable school/community partnerships in Richmond, North Vallejo, Alameda, and Sonoma County; and
  • Provided technical assistance in programming and sustainability for many Bay Area after school programs.
